A fun little mental hand grenade…

…for all my fellow churchgoers out there.

Fact One: the Bible instructs me to let my giving “be done in secret,” and backs up this instruction with stories exhorting the value of anonymous giving, expecting no reward or payback.

Fact Two: As we enter December, I (and millions of other believers) will studiously collect check stubs, receipts, and giving reports from my church so that I can firmly attach a dollar value to my acts of charity for the purposes of reporting them to the IRS and maximizing my personal benefit. In fact, I would never dream of giving to my church in cash, simply because that would make it impossible for our finance guy to issue a report for me at the end of the year.

These facts seem incongruous.

Just chew on that one for a while…

And of course, feel free to leave a comment that will settle this tension in my brain.

  1. I think the “in secret” part is not to be taken literally. Similar to not letting your right hand know what your left hand is doing. The context was “don’t brag about it.” Elsewhere it is written “bring your tithe into the storehouse”. You don’t have to use a secret courier.
Hopefully your meticulous record keeping will prevent the government from taking too much of your hard-earned money.
